WHAT THE SERIES IS ABOUT:
A critical part of accreditation is how well students attain key competencies necessary to lead healthcare organizations. CAHME’s move to a competency based standard began in 2008 and was fully phased in by 2013. The most important characteristic of competency-based education is that it measures learning rather than time. Students progress by demonstrating their competence, proving that they mastered the knowledge and skills (“competencies”) required.
Through site visits, CAHME examined our programs performance and found that many struggle with how to evaluate students in attainment of competencies and how to communicate that information to students. Most programs have difficulty with these standards; of the 62 programs reviewed using the 2013 Criteria for Accreditation only 16 programs measured competency attainment completely and successfully. However, several programs created processes for excelling in those areas.
In keeping with CAHME’s mission, four (4) innovative approaches to competency attainment assessment will be featured in a webinar series in the Fall of 2017.
